How is life working as an officer on a cargo/cruise ship at sea?

Im 16 and mums not keen on me working at sea and thats what i want to do, how can i convince and more to the point what is it like?

What flag ship? Deck or engine? 3 mate on a container ship makes around $12,000/month for US flag ships. Captain can make $30k+. The cruise ships I've been on pay less. The life is long hours without much time off when in port. Know what you are doing or one false move could end your career and put you in jail for years. I like the 8 months a year (unpaid) vacation I get.
