Is medical school in the US too long?

Do you have to go to a US medical school to be a doctor in the US?

    You'll need to pass all 3 phases of USMLE medical exams, and of foreign-trained doctors who ever survive to Phase 3, just over half fail it. Furthermore, there are no longer enough residencies for all the US citizens who earn their MD degrees in the US. Obummercare has hospitals slashing jobs at every level from attendings to janitors. E.g. friend finishing up med school this year says his #1 choice for residency cut residency positions from 4 to just ONE for this year. And he's a Superstar - one of the top 3 students in his class at a very highly regarded med school. He's done multiple rotations at his #1 choice for residency, with superior references & recommendations. Until you are an internationally renowned physician and/or surgeon, it's highly unlikely you can get a US medical license and a position in the US. With more Americans looking for residencies than positions available, they aren't spending money on visas for foreigners.

Not strictly speaking, but it's a lot easier to get a license to practice with a degree from an accredited medical school in the United States than it is with a degree from a school in a foreign country, even if that school's quality is just fine. Similarly, lawyers from common law countries can be admitted to the bar in the U.S., but there are many more hoops to jump through than normal.

Yes and no. Some countries' education will be seen as equivalent, many others might not. Depends on where the education comes from and how that's perceived.
