Did i blow my speaker?

Will I blow a speaker?

  • I am running 2 400 watt and a 2500 watt speaker of of a 1600 watt amp. Will this destroy my subs?

  • Answer:

If you're referencing meaningless peak power ratings you might as well be typing jibberish. Those numbers have no meaning other than to look impressive to buyers that aware of the unethical practices of many of the budget brands regarding power ratings. Besides - simply looking at power ratings, real (rms) or fake (max/peak) in no way determines whether or not your speakers will be damaged. It is perfectly possible to drastically overpower a speaker (on paper), say 100w rms amp vs 50w rms speaker, and get years of good performance from the speaker. It is simply a matter of tuning the amp correctly and using some common sense at high volume. My GUESS is your speakers are in no immediate danger, but if you crank the gain/bass boost the "400 watt" speakers may be under quite a bit of stress. Some "1600 watt" amps only produce 40 or 50w rms per channel.

Unlikely but you you need to know more info, like the impedances of the speakers, the impedance of the amp, and the way you are connecting them. If you turn the volume up slowly you should hear the speakers maxing out well before they pop - it sounds truly dreadful. The general received wisdom is to have more amp power available than the speakers can handle, then the amp signal is always clean. In fact your real danger is that the net speaker impedance will be too low and overload the amp.
