    Because the Earth is tilted relative to its orbit, the sun appears higher or lower at times of the year. When the sun is high in the sky, that is obviously a warm season. When it is low, that is a cool season. The ground cools because it radiates heat into space and space does not radiate it back. Humid air reflects some of the heat radiated by the ground, but dry air does not. So if you are in the desert and the sun goes down, or any time the air temperature drops below skin temperature, you need shelter. The reason it gets cold at night is because the sun provides the majority of the heat we feel during the day. While even at night the ground can retain a great deal of this heat, the air surrounding us does not, so without the sun it quickly gets cooler than it was during the day. As for why we have longer days is because the Earth is tilted as it moves around the sun. So as plain as I can make it basically when the earth is tilted towards the sun we get a longer day that is also in the summer period, hence why summer is also warmer, as said in the first paragraph.
