socialism, and leftist nonsense in general, only work when the people have no alternative. the situation you describe is an example of this law in action. *** what socialist theory says is that the subsidies paid to the working and lower classes should be increased by the amount of the taxes that will fall upon them. in practical reality, however, there is never enough tax revenue to do this -- in part because government in general burns up 20% of all tax revenues in the process of administering the taxes and programs so funded. that 20% is far higher than the private sector spends accomplishing the same tasks -- consumers, for example, do the same allocating budgets work automatically and for free when they shop.

No true liberal supports taxation by sales tax. Here in the states sales taxes and fee increases are favored by conservatives for precisely this reason.
