I've just discovered how beautiful pictures you can get from visiting abandoned places. I'm just wondering do I need any kind of permit in UK to go to abandoned places and ...show more

Answer:
That can be a very "Iffy" question. If there are any No Trespassing signs posted, then for sure you can get into trouble being there, ... if you get caught. Also, if you go through any fencing or windows etc, then you can be charged with breaking and entering, again.... if you get caught. Though it may seem hard to believe, no matter how dilapidated a property may be, it is owned by someone or some corporate entity, so technically, you are trespassing even if there are no signs posted. Simply trying to find who owns some properties can be a daunting task, as they will often not even be in the same part of the country. I also take photos in such places, and have been told to leave, (but it usually does not bother me to be told to leave, because I already have the photos I wanted.. ha ha). If you are able to get some kind of permit, well and good, but most people are not going to go to the trouble, and then likely be turned down due to liability reasons. I don't want to tell you to break the law or do something you may should not be doing, but this kind of thing is just sort of a judgement call. You have to weigh your desire to take the risk of getting caught and possibly arrested and how likely that is to even happen. Also, think of your safety, both from the dangers of the old building itself, but also of any criminal factor that may be using the area. Typically, such places are not in the best locations, and thus is why they are abandoned. Don't get knocked in the head and robbed, or worse, just to get some photos. NEVER take photos in such places by yourself. Here is a series of photos I took in such places. Many of these places were actually well out in the open, though technically I was still trespassing on someone else's property. I was told to leave one area however. This kind of photography is often a judgement call and a matter of what kind of risks, both legally and for safety, you want to take. http://www.lightanon.com/-/lightanon/gallery.asp?cat=161310 steve

You would need the permission of the property owner for liability purposes.

Chances are 100% that the property is owned by someone. Security may or may not be present. Either way you would be trespassing & asked to leave (sometimes not politely!) if caught. There are also Health & Safety hazards - unsafe joists, floors, ceilings etc and in almost all old buildings there will be asbestos - so go at your own risk. As for finding places, urban exploreres (urbexers) have their own websites - a few here; http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/ http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/ http://www.talkurbex.com/ Edit: Steve made a good point about the types of people that may 'hang out' in these locations - they can be more dangerous than the 'security'!

Use a bit of caution.... points have been made about trespassing, the possibility of "inhabitants", and security as well as the dangers of the delapitaded structure ....... still, some seriously cool photo's come out of places like that.... If you chose to go anyway, bring a friend with you and make sure someone not with you is aware of where you are and how long you plan to be in there. Make sure they will summon help if you fail to call them after a specified amount of time. Wear proper clothing, bring flashlights, water and extra batteries ..... think survival for a few hours..... you don't want to discover you should have charged batteries or brought a filter after you are inside. GOOD LUCK!!!

It depends on whether you would be 'trespassing'... You need to be careful, i'd do a quick check before just turning up somewhere...the problem with some abandoned places is they might not allow access on safety grounds...I visit breakers yards sometimes and slip the staff a small donation to let me tour the yard...they sometimes ask to see the images before I leave...which isn't a problem. I won't encourage you, simply because I don't know your age or experience...it can be a dangerous interest if you aren't the sensible type...and don't go exploring on your lonesome..!
