  Freelance is "what you can get", simple as that. You may need to do some freebies to even get noticed. You really need to talk to other designers where you live to get a better idea. As to copyrights, you can do that yourself through the Patent and Trademark Office if in the USA Now understand, if anyone buys your designs, especially at first, you will need to give up the copyright to the buyer or give them a 100% exclusive license for say 20 years. That will just be part of the deal. The copyright will only protect you if they steal the design and do not pay you.
