Warning: I know nothing about art or how to make money on it from a professional standpoint, but I have seen some people make money this way. Making money off the net is an interesting process and the amount of time it takes to earn money can vary. TLDR 1) make deviant art/tumblr/webcomic 2) release content for free 3) gain fans 4) charge commissions 5) build social network. 6) apply somewhere Make a tumblr, deviant art, Pixiv, etc page. Put up most of your good art and then say that you want to do commissions. Make a webcomic. You can go solo, or find someone (friend, classmate, neighbor, whatever) who has a story and draw their story. The way I see most people make money on the net is by posting stuff for free (deviantart, tumblr, webcomics), building a fan base and then charging for commissions. It gives you experience, gets your name out there, builds a portfolio, shows to future employers that people have already paid good money for your drawings, and it just might interest an employer directly. Another advantage of deviantart, tumbler, webcomics, etc is that it allows you to build a social network which can eventually pay off. NEVER pass up a chance to participate in an art contest or guest comics (in webcomics). Commissions and webcomics often force you to work outside your comfort zone which helps you grow as an artist. Sam Logan and the Shortpacked guy both started off as kinda bad artists but over time became really good artists and now they sell art for big publications. The practice and difficult scenarios helped them. The guy who made the RPG World webcomic now works on Adventure Time. Don't be afraid to pander. Do a bit of fan art mixed in with original content. Pandering is an easy way to get fans to come, and some will stay for the original content. Pandering takes many forms. You can just do fan art of famous fictional characters, famous celebrities (look up images of Steven Colbert Patriotism), etc. Monty Ohm made combat vids which were liked but ignored, then a Halo combat vid which exploded his popularity and he received dozens of job offers soon after. Once you get fans see what they are saying and go with their flow. Talk to them in forums, comments, etc since the feeling of belonging will make them more loyal fans. If you do make a webcomic try to like up with a webcomic group (hiveswork, keenspot, etc) as it is an easy way to get early fans. You can switch from one webcomic group to another group later on. This method has a variable time cost, and a low monetary cost.
