How can I tell my betta fish is sick?

How can you tell if your betta fish is bloated?

  • I have a female betta fish for the past 4 months and honestly, I can't tell if she's just growing, fat, or bloated.

  • Answer:

Look down on the fish from the top of the water, if the scales on her sides have a sort of "pine cone" look, she is bloated. In normal growth the scales stay down on the sides, bloating causes them to pop out. Also look at her vent area, if a tiny (1 to 1.5 mm) triangle appears in her vent she is "eggy" and ready to spawn.

if she doesn't show any signs of slowing down or somehow sickly looking, then she's fine. most female bettas are such gluttons that they tend to keep eating. they are not as picky as their male counterparts. be wary of overfeeding as in time, this will cause some serious health problem for your fish. feed only at least twice a day and even skip a day without feeding so as to give their digestive tracts time to fully consume what it's eaten. lessen and vary its diet. you can feed it protein rich pellets, and for its immune system, nothing beats spirulina based food. in time if feed well female betta will tend to grow heavy in the tummy area, thus most inexperienced owners think the fish is sick, bloated or pregnant.

A bloated betta fish will appear as though their scales are sticking straight outwards. If not, your fish is simply growing fast.
