  • Answer:

Well, that really depends on how big this pond is going to be and how many koi you plan on putting in it. Koi are in the same family as goldfish. They are cold water fish (they like the water to be about 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit) and they tend to be fin-nippers. So you wouldn't want to put them in with any kind of fish that requires tropical water temperatures (74-80 degrees Fahrenheit). Koi go great with the common goldfish but you should not keep them with fancy, slow swimming goldfish like fantail goldfish, black moores or bubble-eye'd goldfish because koi will nip/bite at the long, flowy fins of fancy goldfish and fancy goldfish are very slow swimmers, so they would have a hard time getting away from the koi, and they'd also have a hard time getting food during feeding time because the koi would likely eat it all before the fancies would even be able to swim up to the surface. Koi are beautiful fish on their own so even if you decide to only get koi fish, there are tons of different color varieties to choose from. Good luck with your new pond. Hope this helped a bit.
