Answer:
Typically only DVD records would have an input and even then they would normally only be either a coaxial, composite or at best component inputs. So going from the laptop ==> DVD Player ==> projector probably isn't possible and at best clunky. Without the specific models I can't say exactly what you'll need, but if your has HDMI input and the laptop has HDMI output that will be the simplest and best connection available.
