Think of the internet as a tree. At the top there are servers that translate Domain Names into IP Addresses. An ip address is a signifier to a location on a network. We are able to remember names better than numbers, however, so we have DNS SERVERS convert the registered names into IP Addresses. Going back to the tree. It is quite unmanageable for one location to take care of ALL of the IP Addresses, and locations, so they separate into more manageable DNS ZONES that take care of an allocation of ip addresses/names. You see this when you go to register an DOMAIN NAME from a web hosting provider. The web hosting provider might be acting as a DNS SERVER for which they may also manage a DNS ZONE.
