Why doesnt a hdmi to vga cable work?

I have looked around and the answer that people keep saying is that it wont work because hdmi is digital and vga is analog. so how come my vga to dvi cable works when vga is analog ...show more

Unlike HDMI, DVI connectors can carry both a digital signal and an analog signal. Most likely, you're using a device that can use either signal, so the DVI to VGA cable is really just physically wiring a VGA connector to the analog pins on the DVI-I connector. On the other hand, HDMI doesn't support an analog signal, so a cable like that would require it to perform an analog to digital or digital to analog conversion. There are devices like that, but they're usually much more expensive than a DVI to VGA adapter.
