How to save an image in LocalStorage?

Would putting multiple images on one image file save disk space?

  • Say I have five separate image files. If I save those five images as one big image file, does that save any disk space on my hard drive? Or would that "big image file" be ...show more

  • Answer:

No. Use a graphics app that can resize to what's acceptable, then save at a higher compression. If you take 14 megapixel photos in RAW format, they will take up a lot of room. I usually crop then resize to screen size, then compress to 50%. They still look nice yet take up 100K or so. I use DigiKam, Gimp or XNView mostly; those are Linux apps but work on windows too. XnView is probably the easiest.

Since it's unlikely you can fit 5 images perfectly into a single rectangular image, it's likely you'd have a larger file size by combining them. But assuming you could fit them together... and had them at the same resolution before and after... with the same compression ratio... it would be the same file size. If you are concerned with file size, and the images you have now are an uncompressed format (.bmp, .tif, etc) that some cameras create... you can save them in a compressed format and greatly reduce the size. Using a photo editor program save them as a different file type like .png or .jpg.
