How can I turn on an old AT power supply?

My laptop power button is broken? How can i turn it on?

  • If I can turn it on then I can set it up to turn on without the button. But I have to get it on first. So how can I start it up?

  • Answer:

What exactly is broken? The plastic button? Or the actual micro switch underneath the plastic button? Either way, you can get a new part and replace it. If it's the micro switch, it can be disassembled, cleaned and them put back again and it will be good as new.

If the laptop is in standby or sleep mode, then some external keyboards have a "Power On" button that might work by sending a signal to the laptop through a USB port. It's probably just a case of a broken wire lead on the back of the button. Happens a lot, especially with older Dell units. Pop the cover panel loose and fix it yourself, if you're handy with a soldering iron... if not, a computer shop could probably fix it for about $75.
