Using an external monitor with a laptop?

How do you add the external monitor to a laptop using Windows Xp & Ubuntu?

    HI, you may be right, Laptops are generally power conserving by default. there is usually a key combination to press like, Fn+F2 That said, in earlier versions of ubuntu, you could set the screen via the settings menu.(not too sure about 14.04) On ACER laptops the default key combo is "FN" and F5 ( looking at a couple of travelmates here) That all said, on ubuntu if you added the restricted drivers package, you can set it from the relevant program too. if you cannot see it type sudo amdcccle at the command prompt,then go to display manager, then multi display. nvidia type sudo nvidia-settings in the command prompt. on xp just right click the desktop and go to properties. pm me if you need any further help.
