On April 8, 2014 Microsoft eliminated all support for Office 2003. This may affect your ability to download the MS Office Compatibility Pack (EDIT: as well as the updates). Try this site and see if it helps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923505 If you are unable to get it to work, install the free LibreOffice suite and open the doc with Writer and save it in .doc format- Office 97-2003. You will then be able to use Word 2003

The compatibility pack can't be installed until you first install the Office 2003 updates. Once you install the updates you will be able to install the converters. If you don't want to bother installing updates and the compatibility pack, just go to Office.com and work on your document there for free.

An alternative solution to that offered by Artemisc is to download and install a FREE Office Suite, such as Apache OpenOffice, LibreOffice or Kingsoft Office Suite, all of which are compatible with Microsoft Office files, both .doc and .docx, for instance.
