How did facebook applications get started?

Hey so i want to learn .Net, what applications/programs should i download to get me started?

C# is a language Microsoft developed in order to lure people away from Java once their efforts to usurp control of Java were ruled illegal and monopolistic in the US courts (search for info on the Microsoft JavaVM and the surrounding court battles for details). Although C# is popular in the Microsoft only world, Java is the single most widely used language in the world with the largest number of development positions available. A major reason for this is the ability of Java developers to write an application one time and have it work on any computer, regardless of operating system, which has a Java runtime installed. The same program works on a Window PC, Mac, Linux, (free)BSD, VAX or cyber system as well as big iron from places like IBM. Microsoft tried to co-opt Java in order to break this write once-run anywhere boon to the world of computing and failing that tried to back door the process by trying to get people to convert to C# which will ONLY run on a Windows computer and cannot run on anything else. Javascript, HTML (5.0), and XML are critical internet technologies which once again are not Microsoft dependent, while ASP and Visual Basic (whether .NET or previous versions) are exclusively Microsoft to the exclusion of all else. Given the (finally) growing mainstream presence of Linux as well as Mac OS's dependence upon *nix, it strikes me as very ill-advised to focus on Microsoft only tools/development, particularly when there are ample tools which will work on all the various OSs out there which are just as easy to use as the Microsoft development tools.
