While the T3 isn't the camera I would've chosen, it's capable of doing what you want. No DSLR has digital zoom - it's useless anyway - and you increase zoom by changing lenses. Close up photos and video need a macro lens, but this is a specialised area in itself, and not for a beginner. Sit down with the manual, and learn what your existing kit is capable of, then borrow a couple of books from your local library, and take it from there. NOBODY can tell you everything you need to know in the space allowed here.

Do not use digital zoom for picture taking. Use digital zoom when editing your pictures. Digital zoom on a camera isn't a very valuable feature.

"best, clearest digital zoom" Digital zoom (in those cameras that do have it) is not clear. It's basically the same thing as resizing the video or image after the fact—no detail is added, and the detail that was there is spread out over more pixels. You don't need to actually have the camera close by in order to take a "close up". These are actually taken with telephoto lenses from a distance—the zoom makes it appear close. (You could use shorter focal length lenses, but you might not like how it causes faces to appear bloated.) http://www.stepheneastwood.com/tutorials/Tutorials_Lens_Perspective.htm I usually give this link to people comparing mirrors and cameras, but it is useful for you too. The shots taken with the longer focal lengths (where the model looks good) were taken further away than the shots with shorter focal lengths (where the model looks anemic). Using a 300mm lens, the photographer was at least ten feet away. If instead you are trying to shoot tiny subjects at close range (like jewelry, handwriting, insects), you need a 'macro' lens, which lets you focus much nearer to the camera (up to six inches away from the front of the lens on certain models).

The T3 does not have autofocus in video. Some say autofocus in video can cause problems like hunting between foreground and background, but for DSLR's that can autofocus in video, it could be switched off if indicated. Anyway, in video the T3 won't autofocus, and most zoom lenses are not parfocal. That means that changing the focal length setting shifts the focus. So if you had your subject gorgeously manually focused for you video, zoom in and the focus goes wrong. A T5i or 70D would allow you to zoom in as the continuous autofocus corrects the focus.

Both the Canon T3i and the Canon 70D have 1080p HD 3x-10x digital zoom. Although above 3x, it will begin to degrade the image quality. At 10x the video is noticeably fuzzy.

You'll have to buy a separate lens for the rebel in order to get clear zoomed-in videos:)
