How much optical zoom does a video camera need?

Need a camera that's good a night for photo/video, good zoom, not shaky, auto focus under £200?

    Put simply you need more money. So let's see. Night photo and video. Night photography and video are both difficult at best unless you really understand what it's all about. That takes learning, lots of practice and a tripod go with your camera regardless of make or model. Good zoom. You're talking about a point and shoot or a very expensive dslr lens. Any point and shoot camera won't give you the night photos and night video you seek. Not shaky. Shaky has nothing to do with the camera but with your hands. All humans have hand shake regardless of their age so to overcome that you need camera extras like IS or in Nikon's case VR and very steady hands. So the shaky thing, as far as the camera is concerned, is out. All digital cameras have auto focus. However for video you need manual focus and you'll only get that with a good camcorder or a dslr. Bottom line, you won't get what you want... in fact not even close, for £200.

The problem is that for good night time stills photography you need a large sensor so that you get less noise at high ISO - and that is hard to come by for £200. Do you really mean "good zoom" as in high quality, or do you just mean "long zoom". A long zoom is not necessarily going to mean good quality. If you could afford £300 I would suggest looking at a Nikon D3100 from Amazon, but at £200 you are going to be restricted to something like a Fujifilm bridge camera, which isn't going to be great in low light.
