"G" lens versus Vario Tessar lens?

What is the difference between a sony G lens and a karl zeiss vario tessar lens in relation to compact camera eg: cyber shot dsc w80 and dsc?

  • Answer:

Very little. Sony's G lenses, and the Carl Zeiss name, apply to high quality lenses for interchangeable lens cameras. On the digital point and shoots, it is supposed to mean higher than "normal" point and shoot quality glass is used. It is more marketing than anything else.
