How to get from Philadelphia to Toronto?

How can I get from Toronto to Philadelphia? looked at Amtrak but after long emails back & forth discovered only hand luggage & we are travel?

  • across Canada with suitcase ea + walking stick & wheely walker. live in NZ

  • Answer:

I am not sure of the problem. My Canadian daughter has traveled over 30,000 km on Amtrak and has had no trouble with checking baggage. I am not sure you have described the issue correctly to whoever you communicated with at Amtrak.. Looking at this page it says you can check several bags: http://www.amtrak.com/baggage-policy Each passenger can check up to 4 bags - 2 free of charge and 2 for $20 per bag, each not to exceed 50 lbs. (23 kg), 75 linear inches (length + width + height). I do not see an issue here. As for a walker, the policy on those is described here: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?c=Page&pagename=am%2FLayout&cid=1251621565020

Looks like you have 2 options...a Greyhound bus or fly. I know that Air Canada considers wheelie walkers "mobility aids" and does not charge you extra fees to bring those onboard. I am unsure about the policy of other airlines. There are direct flights to Philly from Toronto Pearson airport. http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/before/specialneeds/wheelchair.html I assume you are aware that even though you are from a visa waiver country (and assuming you are traveling with a New Zealand passport) you still may require an ESTA ( electronic system for travel authorization ) before you enter the USA. You will need this document if you travel by air and entering the US from Canada does not exempt you from the requirement.

Try megabus or greyhound or amtrak. There are several low fare options between Toronto and New York, and New York on to Philadelphia. This allows you to mix and match transportation forms, and get a rest stop, all with a reasonable price by booking two separate itineraries. Otherwise, you'll be paying top dollar, and on a schedule that is configured by the bus/train company. What does New Zealand have to do with it? If you're disabled, take the train. It's longer, and comes less often but smoother and safer!

The hand luggage limit is larger than that for a plane. It is similar to your checked baggage size for your flight from New Zealand There is no baggage car on either train you will be on. Make sure you have your border crossing things for when you start in Toronto. Walking stick and walker are not an issue.
