  It's about 4,000 miles, or 6,200 Km, with all of those stops. There is no way we can tell you how much gas will be because it depends on the kind of car you drive and its MPG rating. We can't recommend a car because you don't say how many of you will be going on this trip. Might be a good idea to join, just in case you get stuck on the trip. You are asking us to undertake a huge amount of research for you. It is not likely that anyone will be willing to do that. Part of the fun of going on such a trip should be the actual planning. I suggest that you get a BIG map of the US, post it on a wall, draw out that route and then start looking for interesting places that are along it somewhere. Every US state has a tourism web page that you can find by searching for something like "tourism in Virginia" for example, or "visiting Virginia."
