In the Swiss and Austrian Alps, you may need warm clothes even in the summer. It is chilly in the mountains. Out of the countries you listed, my homeland Hungary is the warmeth. Well, the hottest in the summer, to be exact. Expect hot days and mild nights, perhaps some rare and short thunderstorms, but in general, dry and sunny time in Hungary. Get a light rain jacket to be on the safe side but otherwise, some shorts, T-shirt, light sandals are just fine, especially as you are going to be a tourist, not on business. For hanging around in a Hungarian town, get some help of natives though. Make friends with Hungarians beforehand (like myself, I live in Budapest) and have your Hungarian friends show around the town you go to. DO NOT let business people (taxi cabbies, restaurant waiters, etc) make use of the fact that you don't know the local prices, the money... Invite your Hungarian friend to come with you (actually, you'd better go with a Hungarian friend to their regular places that they know well,) and let them do the bargaining / tipping on your behalf. (Even if it is you who actually pays the service.) This is the way I would do if I were you: 1. Get a Hungarian friend. 2. Make previous calculations as to how much you are planning to spend. 3. Together with your Hungarian friend, find the best exchange rate, at middle/average of buy-rate and sell-rate. 4. Based on your previous calculations, give your friend as much of your Euros that would surely cover your highest estimated expenses. DO NOT change your money yet, -- only leave it with your Hungarian friend in deposit. 5. Use the Forints of your Hungarian friend and keep the invoices everywhere so you can exactly calculate your actual expenses. 6. At the end, only change as much as your Hungarian friend needs back in Forints (if he does not choose to just keep the Euros after all.) And DO NOT go out alone and use services without help of a native. Some restaurants, cabbies etc may try to cheat you on the prises when they realize you are not sure how much is fair. Also the ticket control on public transportation uses quite agressive and pushy people sometimes. They will even try to force you to pay extra fees by threatening you with the police. TO GET A BETTER DEAL, than risking to be cheated, invite your Hungarian friend to as many places you go as possible. Tell him to take you to HIS WELL-KNOWN REGULAR PLACES on your expense. You pay (at the final count), but let him do the paying/bargaining/tippping part and talk to the waiters, drivers, guards etc in Hungarian.
