Answer:
You should check with the travel agents in your city. Airfares will differ tremendously if you're flying out to HK from Beijing vs Boston. Hotels in HK and Macau approx starting from HK$1,000 up per night. Hostels are from HK$200 up per night. www.DiscoverHongKong.com

OK...Hong Kong is a cheap and expensive place. So cheap nasty hotels in the downtown area of Tsim Sha Tsui start at around $20-40 but be aware the room is about the same size as a single bed plus room for a toilet and shower. But you are not likely to get anywhere reasonable or comfortable in the downtown area for less than $100 a night. Check out hotel prices online at websites like expedia.com Food is pretty cheap. Chungking Mansions do Indian food starting about $5 for a meal....and you can get noodles for $3-4. But of course it is hong kong, so you can get a buffet for about $50 per person and the sky can be the limit. Transport is pretty cheap, from I think 50 cents for the star ferry across the ferry (you can invade Hong Kong, oppress the rights of the people, starve them to death, but never ever put up the price of the star ferry across the harbour or there will be riots in the street) for about $3 to take the mini bus all the way to Sai Kun. There is a lot to see and do in Hong Kong without spending money. I walked up Mt Victoria because I was too lazy to wait for the cable car and walked around the summit, that was free and because I ate at one of the many international takeaway chains I had never tried before that are on the summit it was also cheap to eat. Go to the beach, go to temples, fishing villages, island hope and drink beer on the beach in front of an over priced resort and you can save heaps of money. But on top of hotels you would need at least $100 a day for cheap travel and $300 for a full experience. Macao is also cheap, and basically you walk around most of the day, watch free shows in the casinos, eat Portuguese food in cafes.

Let's start with from where you are departing (London, Singapore, Moosebreath, Minnesota)... and how long you are staying. Consider your expectations of accommodations and amenities... going all out or are you on a tight budget.

Depends on how long you will be staying. I would say USD 800.00/ person for all the expenses in HK & Macau exclude all entrance fee and hotel. If you are going to Macau for gambling I don't this amount will be enough for you. Try search for hotel/ hostel in Mongkok or Tsim Tsa Tsui area (Mongkok is the best as is around Lady's Market) from Agoda or other website. Do check on customer review (negative one) before deciding. Some hostel also have their own private room and bathroom and is clean and tidy. The food there is extremely expensive. I went there previously with 3 other friends so we ordered 4 different types of dish (sometimes 2 only) and we shared.

Travel to Hong Kong and Macau is much cheaper especially this year (2014), as the main expense likes hotel rates drop because of the drop of mainland China tourists(largely compared to past year), you could get the news on Google. Go there this year, with a bargained price. because of lesser tourists, you could get a good bargain when buying gifts.

Let's see... counting the gambling losses, the legal fees after your arrest, the bribes to get you out of jail, and the prostitutes and gigolos keeping you company in the wee hours of the morning... I estimate that US$47,000 should get you through it all. But hey... I already know how to have a "good time"! LOL!
We left and returned!
It depends on how long you're staying in each city, and where you live now.

In HK and Macau ,eat and hotels are expensive, for example, just a pot of green vegetables (very simple)and a bowl of porridge, those cost HK$70. Except eat and hotels, everything is cheap. Hotels in HK and Macau approx starting from HK$1,000 up per night. Hostels are from HK$200 up per night. (all the hostels ‘s room are simple and crude,Standard single room is HK$ 200,The bed is so small that i can't turn over in bed.BUT!This price is cheap!)
