How can you sell a refrigerator in Alaska?

How did Russia sell Alaska to a American? How Russia own Alaska in the first place? what about the native Alaskans?

  • Answer:

America was looking to continue the manifest destiny so they bought up the western most territory from Russia. Russia got the land because they quite simply settled it first and had rights to it. The Native Alaskans were sometimes moved around a bit, but most Native tribes still live very secluded lives and in some ways live extremely similar lives to their ancestors.

As they say, you could look it up............. Permanent Russian settlers in Alaska never numbered more than four hundred. Defeat in the Crimean War further reduced Russian interest in this region. Russia offered to sell Alaska to the United States in 1859, believing the United States would off-set the designs of Russia’s greatest rival in the Pacific, Great Britain. The looming U.S. Civil War delayed the sale, but after the war, Secretary of State William Seward quickly took up a renewed Russian offer and on March 30, 1867, agreed to a proposal from Russian Minister in Washington, Edouard de Stoeckl, to purchase Alaska for $7.2 million http://history.state.gov/milestones/1866-1898/alaska-purchase

the Native Alaskans did not participate in the capitalist economy and held no title to the land, so Europeans claimed it as their own.
