How hard is it to get into the NROTC?

How many flight slots does nrotc get each year?

  • How many are given to each unit?Is it extremely hard to get in rotc?

  • Answer:

NROTC gets an equivalent cut out of the expected acquisition numbers for the year for Naval Aviation (from memory, I believe it's about 1200 total slots, though that number could be wrong, and I don't remember if it's based on just pilot slots or SNA/SNFO slots combined). OCS is actually a pretty small chunk of Naval Aviation accessions nowadays; I believe they get about only about 20% of the total billets available (with the other 40% each to USNA and NROTC). Slots are billeted to NROTC as a whole, not to individual units. So you're competing against all the other 1000-ish NROTC midshipmen who are going for URL slots. Is it hard to get? Yes. The general rule is that the top 20% of people requesting any one designator are guaranteed what that pick; however, the problem is lots and lots of people want to be pilots so you end up in a very crowded field. If you aren't in the top 20%, you might make it to be a pilot still, however, needs of the Navy apply...
