How does the inheritance work?

How often do scammers say that they "have" an inheritance or contract work? Also, how often do scammers call their victims?

  • Answer:

The inheritance scam has been around forever, well before the internet. They used to send out letters, not emails. Nobody hires someone for contract work without first interviewing them in person And scammers contact people by phone all the time - I get at least one scam phone call every two weeks from fake computer techs, people trying to sell me crap, people trying to tell me I won a prize/holiday, etc

It would help to know why you're asking. The inheritance angle seems very common, especially for the classic Nigerian scams. Offering some kind of contract works seems common as a scam on Craigslist these days. Calling? I dunno. It doesn't seem that unusual that people report the scammer speaks with them on the phone if they're biting. We don't exactly have a ton of data to know "how often." But the inheritance thing is a very common scam angle -- oh, I inherited billions but can't get to it, and if you just give me a few thousand I'll hand you a million or two later. Right.
