What to do when your light switch won't work yet you know it isn't the light bulb?

  In this order: 1. Check the fuse or circuit breaker. If the fuse is burned out replace it. If the circuit breaker is off, turn it on. If the circuit breaker pops every time you turn it on and then turn the light on, you have a wiring short and you need an electrician. 2. Replace the bulb. New bulbs sometimes burn out. 3. Take the cover off of the switch and look for loose wires. If you find one, turn off the circuit breaker or remove the fuse and reconnect the loose wire. Turn on the circuit breaker and see if the light turns on. 4. Test the switch. The easy way is to turn off the circuit breaker and replace the switch and see what happens. If the switch was not the problem, you end up with a spare switch. Method two is to turn off the circuit breaker and remove the switch and check it with a multimeter. If you don't know how, ask another question or send me a message me or ask the expert in the store that sells you the multimeter. Method three is to test the power going through the switch. Turn off the circuit breaker, add a temporary wire connecting two poles of the switch, turn the circuit breaker on and see if the light is on. If not, you are not getting power to the switch. If the light is on, you need a new switch. If you followed these steps in order and this step shows that you have no power to the switch, then you need an electrician.
