There's been a drought going on in my area, so there are county water restrictions. We have just gone from only being allowed to water your lawn on Tuesdays and Thursdays to not ...show more

Answer:
If yours is the only green lawn in the neighborhood someone is going to be able to figure out you are watering no matter when you do it. Call the city office and ask what the penalties are. There probably is some kind of fine involved.

Grass doesn't need to be watered unless there has been absolutely no precipitation for months on end. Watering your lawn is a waste of YOUR money...

If your lawn is healthy it will go to sleep till the rains/water comes again. I would think you would worry more about drinking water than your grass anyway.

Well everyone can see your lawn doesn't look like theirs. Why would you worry about it when you may truly need to be worrying about your drinking and bathing water.

Most watering restrictions exempt the use of a hand held hose. See if that is the case in your area. If so, you can still water your lawn legally as long as you stand there and hold the hose while you're watering. Also, severe drought prone areas often have a law that allows you to use so-called "gray water" for watering your yard, which is waste water that normally goes into the sewer but can be salvaged and used for watering your plants. Essentially all of the water that comes from all sewer sources other than the toilet is eligible for use as gray water, i.e. showering, sinks, washing clothes, etc. Check it out.

There are usually fines built into the enforcement code for water restrictions. Any city employee, during the course of their day, can report you for disobeying the restrictions. Cops on patrol can. And you can bet your neighbors will turn you in. To many, water restrictions go beyond of inconvenience of have a brown lawn. But as far as what it means to you: It means farmers in your area have tight supplies of water to grow crops, and that will drive up the price of groceries you buy. You won't have lakes or rivers to recreate in during times of drought. And your drinking water may be at jeopardy -- the very water you drink and shower in.
