Can I get rid of tinnitus?

  • Answer:

There are many conditions that can cause tinnitus. These include exposure to loud noise but can also be other organic conditions. If the cause is a disease state or infection, there is the possibility of a cure once the condition is corrected. If it is caused by noise exposure it will most likely be a permanent condition. Even then, the noise level can be managed by a number of therapies. Please read the info graphic attachment to see the many causes of tinnitus. Tinnitus is the #1 ear complaint. I don't know if you'd be able to get rid of it. Most is idiopathic, means no know cause. I first noticed mine when I was 11. But resolving this depends on the cause. "Chikbiskit" isn't completely correct in that it can't be cured. Some can be treated, some cannot. Loud music is not by any means the only cause -- and you've been exposed to noise, some loud, throughout your life. You may find there are times when the tones, ringing or buzzing you hear is louder than at other times. There will be times when you don't hear it, times when you're unaware of it (it's off in the background) and you may notice it changes...evolves...over time. You may hear two tones simultaneously, or a tone that changes back and forth from one "note" to another, a higher to lower. Or the quality of the tinnitus may change over the years or the tinnitus may be more noticeable in one ear rather than the other. I would not go so far as to say yours is probably viral because I don't know. I used to work Head & Neck surgery and have years of experience with all kinds of head and neck conditions but without more information about you and possibly audiology and imaging to review, I'm not in a position to tell you what caused it. I do think, however, the overwhelming odds are that yours is idiopathic. If ever you find it interferes with your hearing, get a referral to an ENT. There may be a cause behind it that can be treated.

No, you can't cure it...there are things that minimise it for some people though ie, some people say that the sound of running water makes it a lot more bearable... It's not always as a result of being exposed to loud noise - it can be viral...because yours is not 'continual' it makes me think that's the case...
