perhaps the absinthe people were drinking 100+ years ago, the absinthe of todays is just alcohol. it has 80-120 proof strength, if that makes any kind of difference.

No, it doesn't, but it's kind of cute that people are still saying that. Absinthe is strong, that's all. It's not special in any way, it won't make you hallucinate, and it doesn't contain wormwood, and wormwood wouldn't do anything but cause some liver damage anyway. It's just like drinking any high proof alcohol.
