That's like asking how to plant a tree without the seeds.Yogurt is alive, so to make some, you need a bit of yogurt, like a seed. Otherwise it's not yogurt. You can use live cultures, because that's the actual part you need from the yogurt. So if you have cultures, then you can make some that is truly homemade.

Cos you only need a teaspoon of live yoghurt to make a load of home-made. Then once you've made that first batch, you have a teaspoon of your own to make the next.....

I believe they ask for store bought yogurt to get the "cultures", the bacteria that ferments the milk. If you have live cultures, by all means, make your own.
