What is the best way to cook asparagus?

My favorite is grilled over charcoal! Next is sautéed in olive oil and garlic! I also steam them. Sometimes I use water and a bit of liquid smoke, and sometimes I use only white wine! Put the spears in a colander above the liquid in a pot and cover. Steam on med high until all liquid is gone.

Asparagus are one of my favorite vegetables and I prefer to simply steam them. Asparagus stalks can be a bit tough so it is best to break off about an inch of the stalk and then peel the rest of the stalk. I then stand the asparagus, tips on top, in wide mouthed glass or jar filled about 1/3 full with water. Microwave on high for about 3-4 minutes. If you like the aspargus more cooked, just microwave in 30 second intervals until done to your liking. Another good way to cook asparagus is to steam them until crisp tender, then spread them out on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle heavily with grated parmagiana cheese and put under the broiler for several seconds until the cheese melts. You can also make bundles of aparagus (cooked crisp tender) by wrapping 4 or 5 stalks in procuitto, spinkle on the parmagiano cheese and then place the asparagus under the broiler.

Grill it together with your chicken.

I too love it grilled. But next to that, since you don't want to grill all the time, is roasted in the oven (for my taste). Like br549 said, olive oil, garlic, a little salt. Roasted til tender the way you like it. Or, depending on the menu, I really like toasted sesame oil and sesame seeds sprinkled on just at the end of cooking.
