Could I use studio monitors as TV speakers?

    Studio monitors that take "line" voltages will work, I just tend not to agree with you about the quality. You'll also have to adjust the volume on the speakers INDIVIDUALLY as the TV volume is not going to work. Frankly I agree that a soundbar is probably a far better bet!

What audio outputs do you have on your TV? Speakers are MOTORS - they consume power to create mechanical motion (sound). Your TV does NOT have powered outputs to drive external speakers. This means you need speakers + amplifier. Since space is probably an issue - you might want to look at a Soundbar. Find out the audio outputs on your HDTV. It will probably be optical. Then go shop for a soundbar that accepts optical as an input.
