How much do your utilities cost in your house?

I would like to get an idea of how much it would cost for utilities on a 100,000 house. I know it varries but would someone give an example?

  • Trying to figure out if my boyfriend and I can afford a house on our salary.

  • Answer:

To make it simple for you to understand, It depends on how must you and everyone else in your family use. It can range anywhere from $150.00 a month up to $500.00 a month on all of your utilities. It can be high in the summer dues to using the A/C or higher in the winter dues the heating bills depending on the weather. MOST realtors can tell just about how much it will cost because MOST sellers will list it when they are selling their homes. Hope this will give you an idea.

Depends on where you live. In my area (NY), my electric bill alone costs around $340 a month for a 2 bedroom. My mother, who lives in FLorida only pays $89.00 a month for the same sized property.

Utilities vary by location. And by size and condition of house. As you don't say where - no one can give you any idea. I would imagine electric (air conditioning) in Florida is more than it is in Michigan. I would imagine heating bills are less in Florida than they are in Minnesota. A poorly insulated house in Wisconsin is going to cost more to heat than a well insulated one. A house with leaky windows is going to cost more to air condition in New Mexico than one with good windows. So - no - no one can give you any examples.

You have not purchased the house yet. This is a very difficult question to answer. We have no idea if you are an energy hog or a conservative and would use caution at every opportunity to save on your usage of any utility. Do you want to use the most expensive cable you are able to use are do you want to use the basic cable which is a bout $19.99 as oppose to the most expensive which could be around $200.00 and more based on the channels you select. The same go with the cell phone, do you have all the whistles and bells or do you have the basic cell service. As the utilities go each area is different in the way the utility company would charge for their services. A KW of electricity in Atlanta, Ga could be at $1.25 per KW, while a KW in Chicago, Il could be $3.15. The same would be with water. A gallon of water could be $2.35 in Atlanta and $4.65 in Miami. It would be to your benefit to contact your local utility companies to secure a pamphlet that would outline the charges for a KW and gallon of water. Once you have determined where and what neighborhood you would want to purchase a house you would be able to narrow you utility cost down more. Deciding if you are able to pay the utility bills are not considered in the purchase of a house. You would need to contact a local mortgage lender, normally one that is authorized to do FHA mortgage loans to obtain a pre-approval letter and determine if you are qualified to purchase a house. One you have applied for a mortgage loan, your mortgage loan underwriter would obtain both your credit reports. Based on the debts listed on your credit reports to pay each month and the amount both of you earn each month to pay these debts from the pay stubs you submitted a debt ratio would be determined. The other factor in determining your debt ratio would be adding you monthly mortgage payment to this formula. Your debt ratio should not exceed 39%. The lower your debt ratio is the more you would be approved to purchase he house of your choice. Once you have been pre-approved for a mortgage loan you would be able to contact a real estate agent to assist in finding a house of you choice. You and your boyfriend are contemplating the purchase of a house. This is like forming a corporation or partnership without rules and a means of terminating the corporation or partnership. You would need to make and write down who would reside in the house in the event your relationship does not go as you plan. Our laws are geared toward married individuals, not between boyfriend and girlfriend. There are clear cut laws on the division of houses and other properties if you are married. I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck. "FIGHT ON"

Where are you living now? Can't you do an estimate on those numbers???? I'm assuming you both live at home and don't see the utility bills your parents pay. Just ask them to see a copy and ask them to educate you. That's what parents do - or should do.

Call your local utility companies. They can give you the average usage and cost for a particular size house in your area.

Utilities are based on the size of the house, not the cost. Its going to cost you more to heat a 4 bedroom house than a 1 bedroom house. Hope that helps.
