How does short term disability work?

Can I apply for short term disability through my state? I'm 22 years old, and I recently just broke my arm an I'll be unable to work.?

  • I'll be unable to work for 6 -8 weeks, I work part-time at my job an I'm not offered short term disability. I broke my left humerus in my arm.

  • Answer:

You should be eligible if you live in a state where you are compelled to pay state disability like California. Many states do not provide that coverage. Good Luck

There are 5 states that offer SDI (CA, HI, NY, NJ & RI). If you are in one of those states and can't work you may be able to receive SDI supplemental income. This depends on how much income you have per week as a part-time employee and how long you have been working.

You need to contact the appropriate authority that would pay you the benefit.

If you were injured on the job you might have workers comp. I don't know of any state with disability insurance even for full time workers.

I had no idea that every state does not offer SDI. I am astonished. If your state does not offer it, there is no alternative that I know of. Linda: Thats not correct. She qualifies for Workmans Comp if she was injured on the job. SDI is for any injury where she has to be off her regular job temporarily.

You only qualify for short-term disability if it is an 'on the job' injury.
