How can I cancel a Macy's card?

Is it really bad if I cancel a macys store card?

  • I went to macys on Mother's Day to buy my mom new slippers. When I got to the register the lady asked if I had a card and would get 20% off if I went ahead and got one. She led me ...show more

Your mom's wrong. The real problem is that it's almost impossible for someone who doesn't have a credit card to get one. I don't know how you did it this time. If you cancel this card, then you won't have any cards, so you might not be able to get a card ever again. Getting a card without a card is so rare that doing it more than once in a lifetime would be almost unbelievable. If you don't need this card, then don't use it. But don't cancel it until you have another one. Because you may need this one to be able to get another one.

If there is no fee then just don't use it. You don't have to actually cancel it.

Scammed?? Did you lose any money?? - No? - then you were not scammed. My Macy's rewards card is a general use credit card. idk exactly what yours is [general, or only good at Macy's]. Figure that out before doing anything. If there is no annual fee, it costs you nothing to hold onto it, but you may certainly cancel it if you wish.

This isn't a matter of being good or bad. If you don't want the store account, then just cancel it. I recommend you do it in writing and request written confirmation that the account is closed and 0 balance. Keep that confirmation forever. If you don't have credit history and no steady income, you probably won't actually be approved for the credit card anyway. Canceling a brand new credit card will not kill your credit. Closing older accounts will lower your average age of account. Opening a new account does the same thing. This can lower your FICO score. Closing an account you just opened will remove it from the mix and basically return your average age of accounts to the point before you opened the account. The hard inquiry caused by applying dinged your score a few points. That would be the only damage to your score if you close the account.
