I passed my driving test in 1995, and did my CBT in 2010. I'd like to go for my full bike licence, but would I need to retake my CBT?

I saw something about getting your licence before February 2001 you can ride a moped for the duration of my car licence. Just not sure if I'd need to do the CBT again before going ...show more

Answer:
Yes - the CBT completion certificate has to be less than 2 years old to ride anything over 50cc on a car licence - Simple as that. ANDY C ALERT - DO NOT TRUST ANY OF THAT AS HE OFTEN GETS THIS WRONG OR OUT OF DATE

1. your CBT is expired, it only lasts 2 years. 2. As you are over 24 you have the choice to do Direct Access to category 'A' licence Take another CBT course, then (properly) supervised practice on a large bike over 595cc/40kW with theory and 2 part practical tests. A bike training provider could probably supply all the different elements (CBT/theory and supervised riding)

Woah, I thought that having 19 years experience of driving and being 36 I might be able to go straight for a big bike! Thanks for your help

Hello You are correct if you got your Full car licence before 1st Feb 2001 you will also have been given a Full Moped Licence. Check back of Photo Part of your licence and next to AM it will have the same date as next to your B (Car). If you want to go for a bigger Motor Bike then it is bad news, CBT only lasts 2 years, And the laws have changed you either have to work from A1 (Light Motor Bike) to A2 (Medium Motor Bike) to A (Large Motor Bike). You start with A1 CBT (Valid for 2 years) In which to Pass the Motor Bike Based Theory test then the A1 Driving test. Gets you your Full A1 Licence. You must hold that for a Minimum of 2 years before you can go for your A2 Provisional by taking your A2 Part 1 test (Like a CBT but a lot shorter) Again lasts for 2 years in which you must pass the A2 Driving test. Gets you your Full A2 Licence. Repeat for Full A Licence. However you have other options. If you got your Full car licence before 2001 you must be at least 18 + 13 = 31. So you could opt for Direct Access course. (Like a CBT but a lot longer and more expensive and from same people) You can go either go straight onto either A2 (Minimum age 19) or A (Minimum age 24). You start with a A1 Provisional on your licence (No CBT) but finish the course with either a A2 or A Provisional licence for 2 years in which time to Pass the Driving test. Up Side saves either 2 or 4 years. Down Side cost and length of course Andy C
