How old do I have to be to create a TV show?

I want to create a TV Show?

  • I want to create a TV show (I already have the idea) but I want to be involved by possibly being producer or audition for a roll in the show because I am an actor, so I don't want ...show more

  • Answer:

I’ll explain how it works, so you will know what you will be facing. First off, you need to learn and master every aspect of the craft and the business. You can't just break in and pitch your shows. You need to write several spec pilots (spec is a script that serves as a writing sample. It isn't aimed for producing, not at the moment, anyway. It only shows that you can write well, and that you understand format, structure, characters, etc.). It's gonna take a while to hone the skills and to build a portfolio. During the process, you better get *professional* feedback (coverage) to know what you still need to work on. In short, you have to bring yourself and your writing to a professional level. Only then you may try to land a rep. But it's not simple either. If and when you do, during staffing season you may go ahead and try to get hired by a showrunner of an existing TV show. After a few years of working as a staff writer on several shows, and after gaining enough experience and trust, you will be able to pitch your own ideas. HOWEVER, most chances are you will not get to produce (be the showrunner) your own show. Not yet, anyway. The network will want someone more experienced. As for acting, you really have to be someone for that. i.e. a lot of experience or a big player in the industry. Networks don’t usually let actors play a role in their own shows that easy. To sum up, once you’ve reached a professional level and managed to get your foot in the door, it’s about trust and proven experience. A big emphasis here on experience. So keep writing, keep honing the skill. Be patient. And most importantly, understand that this is the harsh reality; that it’s very very hard to break in, and that there's a pretty good chance you never will. So don't quit your job (: Hope this clarifies things.
