Difference between self-publishing and publishing with a company?

  When you publish with a company, they will cover the initial costs of printing, marketing, and distribution Once the book sales start, they will recover those costs, plus a percentage, before giving you the rest of any profits. Should a book not reach profitable figures, the publishing company writes the costs off as a loss, which is why publishers are very selective in who they take as a client. When you self-publish, you pay all the up-front costs of printing, and arrange your own distribution and sales. You save on publishers' fees, but you take the risk of not recovering your costs.
