Sounds like the guy's getting metaphysics confused with ethics and partly epistemology. There's three main branches of philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. Take it from me, metaphysics can be defined as the branch of philosophy that concerns the question, "what is real?" Basically, if you've ever looked up at the stars one night or starred off into space wondering "how do we exist, what is existence," metaphysics is the field that tries to answer those questions. In metaphysics, the fundamental principal is that "our most basic concept is that of existence." In other words, the one thing you know for certain about any object, emotion, thought or other entities, is that they exist, and that's self evident. You don't have to prove that things exist because existence is "our most basic concept." When it comes to philosophy, it's hard to keep the branches separate because value exists, and metaphysics concerns existence, but value is the concern of ethics, yet ethics can't concern values without consulting epistemology to see if values can be justified as true or false. Personally, I think metaphysics is a good starting point.
