What is the Nuclear charge of iron?

An iron ion contains 26 protons, 27 neutrons, and 24 electrons. What is the net charge of the ion? In a unit that is C not sure what that is?

  • Please add a how you did that also its a big number I think not like a positive 2 which is what I had originally thought

  • Answer:

+2 is right. protons and electrons have the same charge but opposite signs. + for a proton. - for an electron. Since you have 26 protons and 24 neutrons, you have 2 more protons than electrons so the net charge is +2. The neutrons are neutral (easy to remember) thus the number of neutrons have no effect on the net charge.
