Why hyperbolic functions to be used over normal trigonometric functions?

Please tell me the differences in usage of these two types of functions. And why hyperbolic functions came into picture.

I'm not sure about in the real world, but they are of use in differential equations. The hyperbolic functions are very similar (in terms of differentiation and integration formulas) to the trig functions, and this makes finding Eigenvalues and Eigenfunctions easier since you do not have to write the in terms of an infinite series.
