How are simple diffusion and facilitated diffusion similar? How are they different?

What factors have a different effect on the net direction transport of a molecule by simple diffusion vs facilitated diffusion?

  • Answer:

    1) as laws of diffusion states anything of a high concentration is going to move to low concentration until equilibrium is reached. In biology this occurs across a semi permeable membrane, meaning that only small molecules can diffuse (large has to be active). Facilitated transport must move through a carrier or channel and with the concentration gradient whereas diffusion only needs to move with concentration gradient. 2)during active transport large molecules are passed through a 1-way pump and towards a higher concentration.
