"recieved by the local post office" doesn't nessicarily mean it's the post office closest to you. what probably happened is it went to the post office that's 40 minutes from you, and the truck driver drives to your residence and delivers all the packages he needs to on the way. you should get the item today, but might not be until tomorrow.
