How can we make a telescope at home?

How to make a telescope capable to see saturn?

  • My 12 year old son want to make a telescope in home which help him to see planets. Kindly provide the calculation, sizes of lenses etc.if have any.

  • Answer:

He can see Saturn with the naked eye, as it's one of the brightest objects in the sky, but it will just look like a point of light. Similarly, all the planets (other than Uranus and Neptune) are visible naked eye. You need a telescope with a magnification of at least 25 times to see Saturn's rings, and that is not something which can be built at home with items usually found around the house. Seeing _detail_ on other planets requires a professionally made telescope which will cost at least $200.

5 planets are visible to naked eye. They are Mercury,Venus,Mars,Jupiter and Saturn. If you want to see more details you need a small telescope. For example 4 satellites of Jyupiter is visisble in a small telescope.Rings of Saturn is visible in a small telescope +titan the largest Moon. Lenses are available in stores selling school science items. You can use PVC pipe for tube More better lenses and telescopes are a vailable inIndia from M/s Tejraj.com www.tejraj.com

Purchase a good pair of binoculars and you will be able to see the rings of Saturn the Moons of Jupiter adn the craters of the moon. Making a telescope is more expensive than buying one. If you want a telescope then purchase a 6" or 8" Dobsonian. This will run you around $300

Lalit, I am sure you expect your 12 year old son to look at saturn and many more after that. So you must get a telescope that is at least 6 inches in diameter. Better still is 8 inches or 200 mm if you can. A 6 inch (150 mm) Dobsonian will cost you around INR 21,000 if you want to buy one. Making is also possible but it will need a lot of hard work. You must join a local astronomy club engaged in telescope making activity. You can search for a local club on the Internet.

Making a telescope used to be a pretty common thing for advanced amateur astronomers to do. I did it decades ago. There used to be books on making telescopes, but all of them are out of print and none are available free online. The hardest part is grinding and polishing the main mirror. But today the materials to make a telescope are as expensive (or even more expensive!) that just buying a ready made telescope, and most people don't do it any more. As others have pointed out, All the planets out as far as Saturn are visible as bright stars with no optical aide. And any good spotting scope can show the rings of Saturn. Seeing more detail requires a large and expensive telescope. Even the largest telescopes on Earth show very little detail compared to space craft images. We did not even know there were craters on Mars until the first space craft went there in 1965.

As Saturn is visible without a telescope, all you need is a cardboard tube.

Well, Saturn is visible with the naked eye. If you want to be able to see the rings and the moons, you will need a good telescope with good tracking and need to live where you have good viewing conditions. Your local astronomy club would be a great resource for your local area. Many local clubs also hold "sky watch" parties where anyone who is interested can look thru their telescopes.
