What career path can a recent engineer-turned MBA graduate pursue to see a fast growth in career trajectory and/or earnings?
-
I just graduated from an elite b-school in India & have joined a premier MNC in a sales role, also in India. I have earlier worked in a US IT consulting firm for 2 years before MBA. I want to further fast track my career. I wish to either rise fast in my career or at least see my earnings rise quickly. I am intelligent and hard working. Specific answers will be more helpful and appreciated. Example: Join a bank, or Go for second MBA or Planning Commission or Competition Council of India etc

Answer:
Congratulations! You have already embarked on a successful journey. And that is precisely what your career is- a journey. Enjoy the ride, learn as you go along, and don't just focus on a destination. Focus, instead on your current role and organization: is this something you like doing? Do you have an aptitude for it? How will this role develop you for the next level? Develop your competencies and build skills? It is tempting to jump jobs frequently for immediate/short term gains (level/designation/salary). Some moves pay off, others don't. Think before you move to a new role, if this is in keeping with your interests and goals. And whether you will gel with the new organization culture. Earnings are important, but you cannot decide on career moves, basis this.

Interesting; well framed question. The big question deciding between a fast growth trajectory or fast earnings. They are seldom found together. Let's say you want a fast growth trajectory couples with a steep learning curve. Go find a late stage startup. By late stage I mean valuation > 300 Crores. Such a startup will be able to pay you enough so that you can pay off your education loans as well as proved you that learning curve you so dearly desire. A startup at this stage will be in a high growth phase while not being burdened by the shakes of corporate beureuceacy. Let's say you chose a fat wallet over great experience. The three consistently highly paying profiles are in consulting (the likes of McKinsey), investment banking (Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley) and Business Research (Eg. Agriculture & telecom) This answer is not exhaustive and may not be very compelling. I'll be glad to add inputs if you require. Please let me know through the comments.
