How do you add images to Wikipedia?

Why isn't Wikipedia location-aware?

  • Think: You're standing somewhere, check Wikipedia on your smartphone and you get a list of nearby places, buildings, sights, etc. that have a corresponding Wikipedia article. Could also work the other way round, to add info or images to a Wikipedia article while you're at the spot. Basically Foursquare's functionality, but centered around knowledge distribution and creation.

  • Answer:

The answer is: Wikipedia is location aware, for exactly those purposes you mention.  Are you running an app or using the web gateway?  Switch to the web gateway (for now).  I'm not sure if location awareness has been deployed to the main build; it may require you to switch to the "beta" mode (which is done through the settings). The Wikipedia app for iPhone is woefully out of date.  I'm not sure about the Android app, either (we focused on image uploading software the past several sprints).

Other answers

Wikipedia is location-aware.  Articles on wikipedia can be tagged with the coord attribute for latitude/longitude coordinates.  This data makes its way to Google Earth and the current version of Google Maps Mobile, which both have a standard Wikipedia layer you can turn on to show relevant articles found nearby.
