Great question Tom and I can see that you really want to become a Big Data consultant. So, here are my thoughts. There are two different types of roles out there - Big Data Strategists/Architect or Big Data Implementer (Developer, Data Scientist, etc.). You don't specify which area interests you more and which of these you're better qualified for.If you are a strategist/architect then you'll be spending a lot of time understanding your clients current business model and data architecture as well as their long term goals for the business and key data-related analytics they need to run it. In addition, you will have to understand the Big Data landscape. If you look at it as a puzzle with many different pieces - persistence layer (hadoop distros), batch processing, message processing, security and access control, governance, quality, data wrangling etc. As an architect/strategist you should be familiar with all the pieces of the puzzle and how they fit in. You should also understand the differences between Big Data and Small data implementations and how one can introduce Big Data into their environment. It is also important to understand the best use of Big Data- when does one deploy it and for what problems. If you're looking to be in a hands on development role - then you'll be looking at Data Scientist roles or Data analysis roles. Data Scientists need strong Math, Statistics, Data Analysis and some programming background with hands-on experience. The Data analysis roles will require strong Sql, data wrangling, data quality and such.Hope this helps. Glad to elaborate if you need more information.
